RICHARD GUTIERREZ and KC Concepcion finally got the romantic flick they deserve in "When I Met U". It's definitely way much better than their debut movie, "For the First Time", thanks mainly to the well written script of Aloy Adlawan and the fine direction of Joel Lamangan. It's not going to win awards but it will definitely win a lot of hearts this Valentine season as the movie shows the triumph of true love.
Richard as Benjie and KC as Jenny are both already into a relationship when they meet each other by chance on the way to the wedding of a friend (Bubble Paraiso) in Club Paradise, Palawan. Their respective sweethearts are already there waiting for them, Albert (Alfred Vargas) for KC and Tracy (Iya Villania) for Richard. Both of them are beholden to their much richer steadies who help their families. The relationships of both parties are well defined so it's easy to sympathize with their situations.
Benjie is a pilot and Jenny hitches a ride on his plane on the way to Palawan. As fate would have it, the plane has engine trouble and they spend a night together marooned in an island where a magical kiss happens between them. The kiss changes everything in their lives and the viewers will no doubt be able to identify with the twists and turns in their respective and mutual stories. There are many scenes where you can't help but feel for them, like the supermarket scene where Tracy suddenly shows up and the rainy night where Benjie visits Jenny in her room and her blind father knocks on the door.
Richard has done many Valentine movies and this is certainly one of the best. It's as entertaining as his Valentine flick with Marian Rivera last year, only more "nakakakilig" as the chemistry between him and KC is far more electric. They both give winning performances and the final scene showing KC in the middle of the airport hangar in her wedding dress with her long veil waving in the wind while she's crying for Benjie is just memorable. Alfred as the controlling boyfriend and Iya as the manipulative girlfriend give superlative support, along with Cherry Pie Picache and Tirso Cruz III as KC's parents, Chariz Solomon as her wacky best friend, Bearwin Meily as Richard's sidekick, and Richard's real life brod, Tonton Gutierrez, as his gambler dad. No doubt, "When I Met U" is the ideal date movie this Valentine season.
