JOEY'S QUIRKY WORLD

ASIDE FROM 'WOW MALI' on TV 5 that returned on air last Sunday night, Joey de Leon has another new show, "Joey's Quirky World", to start on March 1, also a Sunday, 11:30 AM before "SOP" on GMA-7. This will also be shown on Saturdays, before "Eat Bulaga". The show was formally introduced to the press last Monday and Joey was absent in "Eat Bulaga" then to attend the presscon

His assistants in the show are Ryan Yllana, who plays two roles as Vicky Bola and as Madam Bondat, a fortuneteller who foresees people's quirkiness in her crystal ball; and Cookie, Belly and Boobay, a triple-headed gypsy assigned to research on quirky places, signage, activities and habits exclusive to Pinoys. They also hosted the hit "Takeshi's Castle" whose last season with GMA-7 just ended. Just like "Takeshi", "Quirky World" is also produced by the Japanese but aired on the Korean Arirang channel.

We tell Joey that local viewers might not be able to understand the meaning of the word "quirky". "E, walang magagawa," he says. "Yun talaga ang original title ng show and we just added my name to give it a more local flavor.. Hopefully, makatulong ito to educate viewers para tingnan nila sa dictionary what quirky means."

The show takes viewers all over the world as it shows video clips of weird, grotesque and bizarre incidents and trivia. "Per taping, I tape three episodes kaya hindi naman ito masyadong time-consuming. Maraming kakaibang incidents ang pinapakita rito, tulad noong restaurant sa Japan na unggoy ang waiters at yung restaurant sa Thailand na hinahagis-hagis ang mga plato ng ulam hanggang sa makarating sa kakaing customer."

Joey started on TV in "Okay Lang" in 1971 and since then, he has had more than 60 shows in all channels. "Ako lang ang naging co-host ng lahat ng big stars natin, from Vilma and Nora to Sharon and Maricel, sa musical variety shows nila. I'm confident na if viewers like 'Takeshi', they'd enjoy 'Joey's Quirky World' even more as it has more entertaining and informative sequences."
What can Joey say about Willie Revillame's remark made while being interviewed on his hospital bed? Willie said that he's watching "Eat Bulaga" at "mas maganda pa rin ang show natin (Wowowee)." At first, Joey doesn't want to answer this. "Let's just talk about 'Joey's Quirky World'," he says.

But when he was pressed for a comment, he adds: "When you write about this, please make it clear that hindi ako ang nagpasimula, huh. Tinanong nyo lang ako kaya sumagot ako. Sa totoo lang, napanood din namin yung sinabi niya sa 'Eat Bulaga' kasi may monitor kami sa studio para alam namin ang ginagawa ng kalaban. Malou (Choa-Fagar, their executive producer) said, 'Huwag na lang nating pansinin.' E, talagang hindi na namin papansinin kasi ganun naman siya talaga. Basta ang nasabi ko na lang, 'May sakit na nga, walanghiya pa rin.' Akala ko, nagkabati na kami, e. Sabi pa niya, gumawa raw kami ng movie. E, siguro, kailangan din ng show niya na mapag-usapan uli. Hindi na siguro talaga mawawala sa kumpetisyon ang ganyan. Siguro, ganun lang talaga siyang tao."

Expect the word war between Joey and Willie to be activated once again.

LARA FABREGAS, HAPPY WITH HIS NEW HUSBAND

FORMER MODEL-actress Lara Fabregas is in town on a vacation and she was interviewed in "Showbiz Central" last Sunday about her former husband, Raymond Bagatsing, who she married in Indian rites in 2001. Raymond, who's 38 years old, married a much older woman, 61-year old newshen Cora Pastrana, in Los Angeles last November. How did Lara feel about this?

"Of course, my initial reaction was I got surprised," she says. "But then, we're all different, so I'm no longer surprised. Raymond can do anything and I wish him all the best na lang. Maybe they're soulmates, so all the best to them."

She adds that they've manage to remain friends. "We e-mail each other every now and then. We communicate. Nagkukumustahan."

Lara is now happily married to a Scottish businessman named Philip. They used to live in London but they're now based in Dubai where she's a stay-at-home wife and mom. They have two sons, Dexter (2 years old) and Milo (7 months).

WHEN I MET YOU MOVIE REVIEW

MABUTI NAMAN at sina Richard Gutierrez at KC Concepcion finally got the romantic flick they deserve in "When I Met U". Definitely, mas maganda ang pagkakagawa sa kabuuan nito kaysa sa kanilang debut movie na "For the First Time" na halatang minadali lalo na ang pangit na ending. , Dapat pasalamatan this time nina Chard at KC ang well written script of Aloy Adlawan and the fine direction of Joel Lamangan na ginawang fast-paced ang kuwento told with much humor at hindi nag-overtop sa mga eksena ng drama. Hindi ito mananalo ng awards pero tiyak na it will win a lot of hearts as the movie shows the triumph of true love.

Si Richard ay si Benjie at si KC naman ay si Jenny. Nagsimula ang kuwento na pareho silang already into a relationship. Nagkakilala sila by chance on the way to the wedding of a friend (Bubbles Paraiso) in Club Paradise, Palawan. Ang kanya-knayang sweethearts nila ay naroroon na waiting for them, si Albert (Alfred Vargas), isang mayamang businessman, for KC at si Tracy (Iya Villania), isang sosyal na pastry chef na ang mayamang mga magulang ay nasa Canada, for Richard.

Kapwa may utang na loob sina Benjie at Jenny sa kanilang mga kasintahan na tumutulong sa kanilang mga pamilya, lalo na si Benjie dahil si Tracy ang nagpaaral sa kanya at pinapautang pa nito lagi ang ama niyang sugarol (Tonton Gutierrez). The relationships of both parties are well defined kaya madaling makasimpatiya sa kanilang mga sitwasyon.

Isang piloto si Benjie and Jenny hitches a ride on his plane on the way to Palawan. Ngunit itinakda ng tadhanan ang eruplano will have engine trouble and they spend a night together marooned in an island where a magical kiss happens between them. Ang halik na ito ang nagpabago sa takbo ng lahat sa kanilang mga buhay and the viewers will no doubt be able to identify with the twists and turns in their respective and mutual stories. Maraming eksenang you can't help but feel for them, gaya ng tagpo sa supermarket kunsaan biglang lumitaw si Tracy habang nag-uusap sina Benjie at Jenny kaya napilitan silang magtago, na lalo pang grumabe nang pati si Albert ay dumating din doon. Cute din ang rainy night where Benjie visits Jenny in her room at ang bulag na ama ng dalaga (Tirso Cruz III) ay kumatok sa pinto and, later, gayundin si Albert.

Marami ng ginawang Valentine movies si Richard and this is certainly one of the best. It's as entertaining as his Valentine flick with Marian Rivera last year na "My Best Friend's Girl Friend", pero mas nakakakilig ito dahil mas may elektrisidad ang chemistry between him and KC. Talagang bagay sila sa big screen dahil parehong very classy ang dating nila. They both give winning performances at ang huling sequence na ipinapakita si KC in the middle of the airport hangar in her wedding dress habang ang mahabang-mahaba niyang belo ay tinatangay ng malakas na hangin ay talaga namang memorable at panalo ang dating.

Mahusay ang suportang ibinigay nina Alfred as the controlling boyfriend, Iya as the manipulative girlfriend, sina Cherry Pie Picache at Tirso Cruz III as KC's parents, Chariz Solomon as her wacky best friend, Bearwin Meily as Richard's sidekick, Chanda Romero bilang tiyahin ni KC na nakailang asawa na, at ang tunay na half brother ni Richard na si Tonton Gutierrez bilang bulagsak niyang ama. Bagay na bagay ring theme song ng movie ang kantang noon pang 70s ginawa ng APO Hiking Society.

LOVE LIFE OF VICKY BELO

DR. VICKI BELO granted her first live interview to friend DJ Mo in the Gimme Mo segment of last Sunday's "Showbiz Central", the one in "SNN" with Kris Aquino being a taped one. Here are Mo's questions.

Of all stars, kanino ka nahirapan sa dami ng binago mo sa body niya? "Never kaming nahirapan kasi magaling kami and we have the latest facilities. If ever nahirapan kami, I can't reveal it due to confidentiality." Dr. Vicki added: "If you want to look like Boy Abunda, go to Dr. Calayan. If you want to look like Dingdong Dantes, go to Belo. Joke lang yun, ha."

Is your daughter Cristalle Henares against Hayden Kho kasi siya ang unang niligawan nito? "That's wrong information. I met Hayden sa UST at palakpakan kasi very popular siya dun. My daughter was also taking up medicine pero hindi niya natapos so I said, dapat doktor ang mapangasawa niya to help in our business. She's 23 and Hayden, then an intern, was 26 and I told her when I got home, I found the guy you're going to marry. Parang mina-match ko sila, but my daughter said, 'Mommy, may boyfriend na ako, si Jeff'. And she's very faithful to him kaya I'm proud of her as she has the right values."

Did you have suspicions that Hayden was unfaithful to you? "None because he's very caring and he was always with me." Is there really a video of Hayden with Katrina Halili? "Yes, there's a video, but it's not the kind that you're thinking of. It's Hayden asking Katrina some questions. What hurt me the most was when Katrina told him: 'Girlfriend mo lang naman siya, ako ang asawa mo.'"

So have you really forgiven Katrina? "I'm a Christian at lagi akong nagpapatawad. Of all the people, sa kanya talaga ako na-upset kasi malapit na malapit ako sa kanya. Kaya nasaktan talaga ako. Pero hindi na ko galit, kasi when you're angry and bitter, nakakatanda yun." Sa tingin mo, may nangyari rin kina Hayden at Rufa Mae Quinto? "Gut feel ko lang, yes. I really feel meron." Is there evidence on this? "May evidence, but again, hindi yung inaakala mo (sex video)."

If you're not that successful sa business mo, will Hayden still love you? "That's difficult to answer kasi that's part of the package. Kasi kung hindi, hindi na ako yun." But do you feel the men in your life are golddiggers? "Not Hayden, because he never took advantage of me. Siya pa nga ang nagbibigay ng mga regalo sa akin. He even returned the car that I gave him. But the one before him, yes, inaamin ko." Does Hayden deserve a second chance? "I don't know. Everybody deserves a second chance. Ako, I always leave it up to God, but not my lovelife, so dun ako lagi nagkakamali kasi matigas ang ulo ko. Kaya ngayon, my prayer about my lovelife is, Lord, kayo na ang bahala."
What's the hardest part of being Vicki Belo? "Many people try to take advantage of me. Naniniwala kasi akong lahat ng tao, mabait, pero lagi na lang akong nasasawi.

IS IT THE END FOR KATRINA?

WE CAN'T HELP but pity Katrina Halili. Whatever setbacks she's suffering in her career and lovelife right now, she brought it all to herself. She was given so many good chances, but she belew it. It's obvious she and singer Kris Lawrence have also broken up but she just won't admit it. She now says they cannot break up since they have never admitted that they were on, just close friends.
But at the height of her controversy with Hayden, she was proudly proclaiming that Kris was standing by her side and completely understood the situation as the liaison with Hayden happened way before she and Kris met.. She was also proud that during the last Christmas holidays, Kris introduced her to all his family members in California who she said were all nice to her and accepted her.

Now, when she's asked about Kris, she's singing a different tune and just cries. She insists nothing went on between them before. She added that it just so happens that they're now both busy with work so they seldom see each other anymore. Busy with work? That's puzzling since, as far as we know, GMA-7 hasn't assigned her any new show after "Gagambino" ended and even the "Miss X" project she's supposed to shoot in Europe is now in limbo. Kris himself has no assignment on ABS-CBN for ages now.

"Gusto ko na lang magtrabaho," adds Katrina. "Mas gusto kong maging single na lang kasi pag nai-in love ako, puro pagkakasala lang ang nangyayari."

Katrina, it all depends on who you fall in love with. When you fall for someone who everyone knows is the boyfriend of your employer since Dr. Belo got you as endorser of Belo Medical, then that's definitely a sin that will tarnish your reputation forever in the eyes of the public. As one writer observes: "Siya talaga ang sirang-sira sa ginawa niya kasi ang image niya, trineydor niya si Dr. Belo na ang dami pa namang ginawang retoke sa kanya for free."
